Chevrolet Bolt EV vs Bolt EUV: Which Is the Best Buy?

People thought Elon Musk was crazy when he first mentioned electric cars. Today, manufacturers are trading punches on who will make the best electric vehicle. 

The Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Bolt EUV are two siblings fighting for pole. With a similar name, akin electrification, and from the same parent company, many would assume both cars are identical. However, their differences are subtle but distinguishable. 

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is a hatchback model that offers versatility and space for your cargo. The Bolt EUV is an SUV, a perfect utility car. Both,of course, have the range to cover your miles. 

While it’s natural for the cars to seem indistinguishable, some elements differentiate them. Explore the nitty gritty differences between the Chevy Bolt EUV and  EV: 

Vehicle Development 

General Motors (GM) is the brain behind Chevy Bolt EUV and EV. The Chevrolet Bolt EV’s production began in 2016, rivaling Tesla’s dominance. This hatchback model was unveiled in the same year as part of GM’s 2017 lineup.

GM’s resolve to dominate the EV market was apparent in 2021 when they launched the Bolt EUV, a sibling version of the Bolt EV, but part of the SUV class. Both vehicles were natural fits for consumers. 

GM’s notable sales milestones for EV the cars include:

  • Selling 79,067 Bolt EV units by 2020 in the United States alone. 
  • Ranking as the second best EV seller in 2017 after selling 23,297 vehicles. 
  • Increasing their EV revenue for 2021 after introducing the Bolt EUV. 

Unfortunately for GM, they invested in an industry where electric technology is the defining element, something they weren’t conversant with after years of manufacturing gas-powered cars. 

GM first recalled their Bolt EV in 2020, citing potential fire risks among their 2017 to 2019 models. They also recalled their Bolt EUV units in 2021 due to battery defects.

Comparing the EV and EUV 

The Chevy Bolt EUV vs EV is a never-ending discussion featuring doctored truths and inaccurate fallacies. Below is a depiction of their differences.  

1.Price 

While the Chevrolet Bolt EV starts at $41,542, the Bolt EUV, with its SUV-like features, comes with a higher price tag of $43,182.

2.Exterior Design 

Both cars look similar at first glance, but their differences are vivid if you are attentive. The vehicles’ front-end lighting features Chevrolet’s signature design, but their noses are dissimilar. 

The Bolt EUV has an upright nose and rear hatch, a common feature among SUV units. The hood is also long, another element differentiating this model from its twin, the Bolt EV. Capping off its cross-like family features is a tall roof line. 

The Bolt EV has a short nose, thanks to its small hood. The front end is closed-off, providing a striking dissimilarity between both models at first glimpse.

The Chevy Bolt's LED taillights are a real standout feature, giving it a bold and edgy look. Meanwhile, the Bolt EUV's wider light bars perfectly complement its sculpted rear bumper, creating a unique and stylish design that sets it apart from its sibling.

3.Interior Design 

Both vehicles’ interior designs showcase the features of a typical electrical vehicle. From the bulk interior technology, including an HD touchscreen display, to comfortable seats, the Chevy Bolt and Bolt EUV are stacked with a plethora of spectacular interior features. 

The Bolt EUV distinguishes itself with a thicker steering wheel. The standard ambient lighting adds to the Bolt EUV’s sleek design, but nothing beats this car’s adaptive cruise control feature. 

As for the legroom, you will have more fun driving the Bolt EUV for long distances than the Chevy Bolt. 

4.Electric Range 

The Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV do not disappoint when considering their electric ranges. You can easily stretch the Chevrolet Bolt to 417 km on a full charge, thanks to its 65-kWh lithium-ion battery.

Unfortunately, the Bolt EUV comes short despite having the same battery pack. The car can only manage 397 km when fully charged.

The EV and EUV deliver a similar horsepower of 200hp, but you will cruise easily with the Bolt EV because it accelerates from 0 to 96 km/hr in 6.5 seconds. The EUV can only accelerate in 7 seconds.

As for the torque, the Bolt EUV has a 360lb-ft/Nm, which is unsurprising considering it weighs 1669kgs. The EV’s torque is 266 lb-ft/Nm and weighs 1628 kgs. 

5.Charging Time 

Since these vehicles have the same battery system, their charging unit is similar. Therefore, both have an overall charging time of 7 hours when using the 240-volt charging plug.  

When using a 120-volt outlet, expect a charging rate of approximately 4 miles of range per hour for both electric cars.

Users of DC fast charging stations will appreciate the Bolt EV's ability to add up to 100 miles (160 km) of range in 30 minutes. The Bolt EUV can only manage 153 km of range using the same charger within the same time-frame.  

6.Trunk Space

Many would assume that the EUV has more trunk space, but it only provides 1,611 liters of cargo volume. The Chevy Bolt provides 1,614 liters of cargo space despite its small stature. 

Deciding Between the Chevy Bolt EUV and EV

If passenger comfort is a priority, the Bolt EUV provides more space. For those on a budget, the Bolt EV is more affordable and offers a slightly longer range for daily commutes. 

Tech enthusiasts might lean towards the EUV with its additional advanced features. While the Bolt EV has slightly more cargo space, the difference is minimal, so it might not be a deciding factor for most. 

Overall, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is perfect for short commutes, while the Bolt EUV is ideal for long weekend trips involving many passengers.
